Relationships and Sex Education
Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
From the Summer Term 2021, it is a statutory requirement that all primary schools in England and Wales teach Relationships Education and Health Education as a fundamental part of the curriculum. The statutory guidance can be found at:
What does the new guidance mean?
The new guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and forming and maintaining healthy relationships. Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, it will give children and young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and will help them take responsibility for their own well-being.
We will be continuing to provide the teaching of Sex Education in line with the Science curriculum and our current PSHE curriculum. All the sessions will be age-appropriate and meet the needs of all pupils in the class.
Right to withdraw your child
You cannot withdraw your child from Relationships Education because it is important that all children receive this content, covering topics such as friendships and how to stay safe.
If you do not want your child to take part in some or all of the lessons on Sex Education, you can ask that they are withdrawn. At primary level, the head teacher must grant this request.
Please also note that the science curriculum in all maintained schools also includes content on human development, including reproduction, which there is no right to withdraw from
